Foxconn recently announced that the company will leverage Sharp's 495 5G NR (New Ratio) patents declared at ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) to expand their influence in 5G together, according to United Daily News on April 16. As of the end of March 2018, Sharp ranked 3rd for the number of 5G patents granted, next to Ericsson and Huawei and followed by Intel. Taking advantage of 5G's advantages of lower latency networks and ultra high-speed data rates, Foxconn and Sharp will focus on the development 8K/4K UHD video resolution, industrial IoT, security robotics, automation, and logistics. Foxconn's 5G ecosystem will be built around its 5G research institute and affiliates such as Sharp, MTI Technology, CyberTAN, and Asia Pacific Telecom.
